Sydney Terpening has been competing in speed skating since she was nine years old. Now, Sydney is 16 and her passion for speed skating has landed her on the Adirondack Speed Skating Team. "I love to go fast, I love to compete and I love to win," Terpening stated. Currently, Sydney resides in Lake Placid while her family remains in Oswego. Sydney admitted that while she spends a portion of her summer in Oswego, she will return to Lake Placid full-time to resume her training. "Although I miss my family, friends, and Oswego very much, I know that this is where I need to be to get the coaching and training that I need to succeed," said Terpening.
In January 2017, Sydney placed 2nd overall for Jr. B ladies for metric-style long speed skating in Junior Nationals in Salt Lake City, Utah. In February, Lake Placid hosted The 2017 Age Class Nationals, "I was so excited to compete on my home ice and defend my National Title," she said. For her third year in a row, Terpening won the All-Around National title for her age group.
The sport of speed skating is unique as it is not a school sport, and is not a college sport, so there are no scholarships for speed skating. "I do it because I want to continue to improve and go as far as I possibly can; I want to go to the Olympics and my goals are to qualify to go to the 2018 Olympic Trials and in 2022 to compete in the Olympics in Beijing, China," Terpening said.
Aside from her drive to compete in speed skating, Terpening is an excellent student. She is a high honor student currently attending school in Lake Placid. We at Iheartoswego.com wish her all the best!
