Physical and sexual child abuse is the most serious health problem that youth face. It is a prevalent problem that affects hundreds of youth and their families in Oswego County.

Last year alone, the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County provided services to 541 children and their families.

“Child abuse in our communities is a serious problem,” said Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Karrie Damm. “We are helping families heal and play a major role in investigating and prosecuting abuse cases but we cannot do it alone. Ending child abuse takes a cooperative, community effort. We must empower community members and invite them to join us in our efforts. Children should be loved, protected and nurtured so they may grow up healthy with their sexual boundaries intact. That’s a goal that each and everyone one of us needs to be focused on.”

With that goal in mind, the CAC is offering a 2 hour training course through the Darkness to Light program entitled Stewards of Children©. Designed for organizations that serve youth, those that are mandated to look out for the safety of children while in school, during sports or other after school activities, faith groups, parents and community members that are concerned about the safety of children, Stewards of Children© is a nationally recognized, evidence based training program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors which minimize opportunities for children to be abused.

“Stewards of Children© is an effective and impactful training that educates adults on how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child abuse,” said CAC Outreach and Prevention Advocate Jessica Westberry. “The training focuses on empowerment. The skills encompassed in this training provide responsible adults a better understanding of what child abuse is and how it happens. It educates them on recognizing signs of child abuse, how to report it, and the importance of supporting others efforts to prevent sexual abuse.”

The next Darkness to Light Stewards of Children© training will be held April 17 beginning at 6:00 p.m., April 24th at 10:00 a.m., and April 30th at 6:00 p.m. at the CAC Main Office, 163 South First Street, Fulton.
