Students at the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation recently lit-up someone special’s Valentine’s Day.

Teacher Rachelle Salmonsen visited the new CiTi library with her English language arts classes where students listened to directions, collaborated with one another and remained on task to create light-up cards for a friend or family member. Librarian Tammy Cummings offered the hands-on activity in the new Makerspace area to familiarize students with the area and present the sweet lesson.

Copper tape was placed in a specific pattern on the inside of a card, and both LED lights and a battery were carefully placed in designated spots in order to complete the circuit. When the card was folded, people used the “push” word on the heart-filled front of the card to make the card light-up in a variety of colors.

Cummings said skills learned from the activity may be utilized to create interactive displays for future projects. The added bonus, Salmonsen said, was students now know where the library is and may access it to check out books, complete research and receive help when needed from Cummings.
