CNY Arts Center Announces 2018 Theatre Season

With the CNY Premiere of The Hobbit underway, seven SALT nominations and one exciting win for the 2017 season fresh in hand, CNY Arts Center announces the 2018 season of plays and musicals for the mainstage located at 11 River Glen Dr. on the Cayuga Community College Fulton Campus and the Arts Hotspot at 47 S. First St in downtown Fulton.

Titles, performance dates and audition dates are set for the production season that includes three musicals and 3 plays plus a new series of One Acts, Open Mic nights, dinner theatre and a new youth comedy improv troupe. The rich variety in the season offers many opportunities for actors, designers, and theatre professionals.

Kicking off the season with The Curious Savage, Dana Thomas will debut as a new director in the Arts Center Mentoring program under the guide of Producer Nancy Fox. The Curious Savage is an entertaining comedy by John Patrick, February 9-18. At odds with her grown stepchildren, a wealthy widow and an unlikely band of social misfits collaborate to defeat plans to heist her money in this high comedy. Auditions for the production will be held Saturday, November 11 from 10am to 1pm and Monday November 13 from 6:30-9pm at the Arts Center, and Tuesday, November 14 from 6:30-9pm at the Arts Hotspot.

Shrek, The Musical, Jr directed by Adam Schmidtmann will give kids ages 7-18 their spotlight on stage April 6-13 with auditions being held at the Arts Center, Saturday, December 3 from 3-5pm, Sunday, December 4, from 3-5pm and Monday, December 5, from 6-9pm. “Beauty is in the eye of the ogre,” as stated in the production promo, “in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.” Ben Borenstein music directs while Jessie Dobrzynski choreographs.

A departure from music and comedy is next with returning director Rebecca Fox in I Never Saw another Butterfly, the emotional Holocaust remembrance play from Celeste Raspanti running May 11-20, 2018. This beautiful and touching story has an important and timeless message. Auditions are scheduled at the Arts Center, Saturday February 10 from 1:30-4pm and at the Arts Hotspot, Monday, February 12 from 6-9pm.

Celebrating Christmas through July, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas will headline the summer family musical August 3-12 under the direction of Nancy Fox. Based on the Paramount Pictures classic movie the Broadway musical will audition at the Arts Center, Saturday April 14 from 10am-1pm and Monday April 16 from 6-9pm. Dan Williams returns as Music Director.

Shakespeare returns to the lineup with Twelfth Night directed by Marguerite Beebe September 21-30. Shakespeare's comedy of gender confusion, in which a girl disguises herself as a man to be near the count she adores, only to be pursued by the woman he loves auditions Saturday, April 21 and Sunday April 22 from 2-6pm both days at the Arts Center, and Monday, April 23 from 6-9pm at the Arts Hotspot.

The 2018 Mainstage season wraps up with the beloved Louisa May Alcott classic Little Women, December 7-16. Co-directed by Nancy and Rebecca Fox, the musical will audition Saturday June 9 from 10am –noon, Sunday June 10 from 2-6pm, at the Arts Center, and Monday June 11 from 6-9pm at the Arts Hotspot. Ben Borenstein returns as music director.

The Arts HotSpot will debut its own season of activities and events at the downtown location, 47 S. 1st St. where a small stage will accommodate Talent Share Open Mic night once a month. The new venture launched November 4 and will return December 9 from 7-10pm. Monthly Talent Share Open Mic will float around mainstage events scheduled at the Arts Center and will be announced on the Arts Center web site,

The brand new Slouch Hat Solutions, a JR comedy improv troupe will debut in the 2018 season and perform just prior to each Top Hat Solutions, the adult comedy improve troupe which returns quarterly. Performances are scheduled for March17, June 16, September 22 and either November 17 or December 29 TBA.

The final offering at the Arts Hotspot will be the launch of One Act Weekends where short plays from 10 minutes to an hour will offer actors and directors smaller plays and performances with minimal to no set, lights or costuming. Audiences will enjoy seeing actors take on challenging roles and expand their skills with attention to the story and character development without technical enhancements. One Act Weekends are scheduled for January 12-14, March 2-4, May 4-6, June 1-3, September 7-9, and November 2-4. A minimal admission will be charged for each event to help support the Arts Hotspot and continued programming at CNY Arts Center.

The popular dessert theatre returns with a transition to dinner theatre being offered in collaboration with the Oasis at Thunder Island. Combining dinner with musical cabarets and short productions, Dinner Theatre will launch December 14-16 with A Tribute to Walt: A Culinary Cabaret. More dinner theatre titles and entertainment will be announced in early 2018 for the anticipated partnership with Thunder Island located at 21 Wilcox Rd. in Fulton.
