At Colloca Estate Winery, located on the shores of Lake Ontario on Little Sodus Bay in Fair Haven, New York, they just finished celebrating being named 2019 New York Riesling Winery of the Year by the New York International Wine Competition held recently in New York City.

But then last week, their 2017 Dolce Riesling was named Best Late Harvest at the 34th Annual New York Wine Classic held in Watkins Glen. Another great recognition of the quality of wine from The Lake Effect Vineyard®.

Known as “The Oscars®” of New York wine competitions, the Classic is organized by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. This year the competition included 883 New York Wines from across the state. A total of 31 Double Gold, 56 Gold, 278 Silver, and 320 Bronze medals were awarded by a panel of more than 20 judges consisting of influential wine writers, wine educators, retailers, restaurateurs and experts from around the state and globe.

Colloca Wines won 2 Gold of the 56 awarded and won for the following wines:

  • Gold for the 2017 Lake Effect Vineyard® Dolce Riesling
  • Gold for the 2017 Lake Effect Vineyard® Riesling
  • Silver for the 2017 Lake Effect Vineyard® Chardonnay
  • Bronze for the 2017 Lake Effect Vineyard® Dry Riesling
  • Bronze for Mindy's Giggle Juice® Carbonated Rose Wine

Dr. Chris Colloca, CEO and Founder, while proud of the awards was not surprised. "Though we're a relatively new winery we're winning against some really well established vineyards because of the special effect we get from being on the shores of Lake Ontario," he said. "We enjoy the same macro-climate effect that wines in the Finger Lakes get from those lakes, only it's a much bigger lake with a bigger positive influence".

“The New York Wine Classic is one of our largest annual events honoring the best of New York Wines. We are thrilled with the turnout this year. The Classic and our annual NY Drinks NY events continue to help New York shine as a truly exciting and innovative wine region,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director, New York Wine & Grape Foundation.

Dr. Colloca believes this year's harvest at Colloca Estate Winery will be even better. "It's an incredible honor to be recognized for all the hard work that goes into making our wines the very best they can be. The weather this year is bringing promises of even better wines for the future".

New York Wine Classic winners will be featured on August 28th and 31st, 2019 at the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse and at regional events and wine dinners through the rest of the year.
