For the second consecutive year, Dan Kapuscinski is the James Shutts Memorial champion at Oswego Kartway.

After qualifying on pole position and leading every lap of the first 22-lap main event segment, Kapuscinski drew position No. 6 in the line-up redraw at the halfway point of the race and had to restart in the sixth position for the final 22-lap segment.

Kapuscinski was able to make quick work of the majority of the field in just a matter of laps, closing in on the rear bumper of new leader Jordan Sullivan in the late stages of the Super Heavy Clone event. With only three laps remaining, Kapuscinski was able to dive under Sullivan to take the race lead and drive off to his second consecutive James Shutts Memorial win.

Like Kapuscinski, for the second consecutive year Sullivan took the runner-up position in the 44-lap special with Thomas Montgomery, Josh Ostrander and Freddy Kiefer in the top five.

After setting fast time in time trials with a lap of 8.287 seconds, collecting $122 from D&S Landscaping, Kapuscinski led the 12-kart field to the green on Friday evening with Nick Tryt, Sullivan and Shannon Pitcher in tow.

Kapuscinski fended off Tryt, Josh Ostrander and Sullivan in the first 22-laps to win the first segment, collecting another $122 from Dan Kapuscinski Motorsports Promotions.

Following the re-draw, Kiefer would assume the race lead ahead of Dave Cliff, Kyle Weeks and Sullivan, with Kiefer leading early in the second segment.

However, Sullivan and Kapuscinski were on the move at the drop of the green with the duo running first and second by lap 30.

As the laps ticked away, it looked as though Sullivan would prove the victor, but with only three laps remaining Kapuscinski found enough room to the inside on the back stretch to sneak by and take the win ahead of Sullivan, Montgomery, Ostrander, Kiefer, Cliff, Tryt, Weeks, Paul Fountaine and Rusty Natoil.

With purse money, contingencies and lap money, Kapuscinski’s win was worth $516.
