Born in Minetto, he was the son of the late Leon and Nina (Harding) Dumas. He attended Oswego City Schools, served in the United States Navy during WWII and graduated from Oswego High School upon his return.
He retired from Niagara Mohawk as a hydro-electric operator after a long career that began at the Oswego Steam Station. Following retirement, he set out to wear a path into the sidewalks of 'his town', and he encouraged others to do the same.
He met and married his wife of 70 years, Emily (Ranous) Dumas and together they raised their four children. He loved his time with his family and his grandchildren.
He was a life-long member of the Minetto United Methodist Church where he could often be found painting, mowing, ushering, or working at various church functions. He also served as Minetto Town supervisor for several years, was a 25+ year member of the Minetto Volunteer Fire Department, and a 70+ year member of American Legion Post 486.
Fred is survived by his loving wife Emily; his sons, Karl (Sara) Dumas of West Point Utah, Dennis (Janet) Dumas of Fulton NY and Glen Dumas of Henrietta NY; his daughter, Alicia (Jeffrey) Brocht of Henrietta NY; two brothers, Richard (Kathy) Dumas of Liverpool NY and Edward (Sandy) Dumas of Minetto NY: six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his brothers; Donald and Lyle Dumas and sisters; Doris Godfrey, Lois LaFore, Tessa Price, Mary McCann, Barbara Hitchcock, and Dawn Hart.
A memorial service will be held in the Minetto United Methodist Church, Minetto NY on Sunday, September 15th at 2:00 p.m.
