Nestled in the countryside of Oswego rests The Country Cabin, a two-story log cabin filled with antiques that are sure to make you walk down nostalgia lane.

Mary Powers, owner of The Country Cabin, established this unique country store, located on 456 Myers Road, 23 years ago. She had a small space above her garage which she filled with handmade items ready to be sold.
"It started out as a hobby," she said.
When Powers and her husband later decided to build a log home, she was not sure whether she would continue with The Country Cabin.
"One day, a lady showed up and wanted to know if I was open, and I thought, 'Well I have a couple boxes left, I'll just add a little bit to it,'" she said. "And I opened one little room and it just spread."
Today, the Country Cabin is a 3,200-square-foot cabin with antique cans of Monarch Cocoa, Watkins Baking Powder, rag dolls, skinny, tall Christmas trees and furniture occupying all three floors of the cabin. The basement is filled with items sold by different vendors and candles give off a sweet aroma that spreads throughout the first floor. Lit chandeliers hang from the ceiling on the second floor.
"I get the antiques from flea markets, yard sales and auctions," Powers said.
With a thriving business at her fingertips, Powers runs The Country Cabin all on her own, giving her a unique opportunity to get to know her customers and vendors.
Not only does Powers run The Country Cabin, but her and her husband occupy three small rooms on the second floor, which they call their home.
"Being able to live here with it all is great," she said.
Many different people visit The Country Cabin. Powers says people travel from Syracuse, Rochester and other surrounding cities in central New York to visit her store. She also said she has gotten strange requests from people when they enter her store.
"One day, a lady came in and she had just heard about the store," Powers said "She was looking for a sun dial for her yard."
She said she didn't have one in the store so had to investigate a little bit online for her.
"I did find one, though, and it was really just the weirdest thing," Powers said with a smile. "Normally I don't carry those!"
Powers enjoys communicating and interacting with her customers so much that she also assists them with any questions they may have about interior decorating.
"I go over their house and get some ideas," she said. "From paint, right up to furniture and curtains. I can get them for my customers if they need anything like that."
The Country Cabin hosts annual flea markets right outside of the store during the summer. This year will be the fourth annual flea market, which will run on Aug. 10-11. Powers said different vendors from all over New York set up tents and tables and showcase their items. Last year, she said, the flea market drew about 1,500 people in two days.
"People love it; they love coming to see the different items the vendors have to offer," Powers said.
The Country Cabin is open Wednesday through Sunday all year round. The store also has its own website, www.countrycabinoswego.com, which features many items in the store. Visit their website, or call 315-342-3390 for more information on items.
"I want people to experience the relaxed atmosphere here," Powers said with a smile.
