Taylor began her career at Morningstar 22 years ago as a graduated practical nurse and has spent the past 18 years as head nurse for Morningstar’s B Wing. As recreational therapy director Taylor will help to create and oversee all of the activities available to Morningstar residents.
“I’m excited about this opportunity,” said Taylor. “I love being a nurse. I enjoy the work that I do with our residents and getting to know them and their families. As recreational therapy director I consider this an opportunity to extend nursing in a new direction. I’ve always been interested in recreational therapy. This new position provides me with the opportunity to spend more one-on-one time with our residents and get to know them better. The chance to combine that aspect with my nursing skills is something I’m looking forward to.”
Taylor noted that scope of recreational therapy and activities has evolved greatly and is more proactive than in years past. “There have been numerous changes to the approach in how older adults are cared for. Recreation and activities are now focused on resident engagement. Whether it is chair exercises, table top volleyball, trivia or other games, it’s all about keeping residents physically active and mentally sharp.” said Taylor.
In addition to indoor activities Taylor will oversee outdoor activities as well as resident outings. “Weather permitting we have activities planned that will allow our residents to have some fun outside and enjoy the sunshine. There will also be monthly outings ranging from lunches at local restaurants and picnics in the park, to fishing, bowling, and other fun destinations,” said Taylor.
One of the goals Taylor has set for herself is to get everyone from fellow staff members to the residents’ visiting family members involved in promoting healthy, fun interaction. “We have plenty of fun events such as monthly Happy Hours, Breakfast Café’s, Birthday Parties, Noontime BBQ’s during the summer, holiday celebrations and more. Family members are always encouraged to attend and many of them do,” said Taylor.
Doviak cited Taylor’s experience and her dedication to Morningstar and its residents as why she is a perfect fit for the job. “Linda’s relationship with our staff, her care for our residents and her concern for their well-being is impeccable. Linda’s knowledge of health care and passion for working with older adults will serve her well in her new role as recreation therapy director,” said Doviak.
“Working at Morningstar is a great experience,” added Taylor. “It’s home to me. I truly enjoy working with older adults in this setting. In a sense we become extended family members and I consider our residents a part of my extended family as well. It’s very rewarding to know that I and the staff here at Morningstar are making a difference in a loved one’s life.”
