“We were just smitten with it after experiencing it on Broadway with iconic actors Carol Burnett and Brian Dennehy, we just knew it was the perfect show to start our very first season." "We wanted to bring it back as a traditional Valentine’s Day treat - a tribute to Cupid’s holiday!" swooned Tammy Wilkinson, TDJ Artistic Director.
Local favorites Banna Rubinow and Mark Cole take the stage again this year. “I saw this play on Broadway many years ago, and then at Syracuse Stage some years later. Both times I left the theater thinking, ‘Dear God, if you love me at all, please give me a chance to be in this play.’ It worked! Getting to do it — and with Mark, no less! — is almost too much happiness!” Banna remarked.
Mark Cole observed that "in a letter the conversation is between a reader and the words on the page, and the writer hopes that what was intended comes through. Gurney's play offers us the opportunity to journey through a complex relationship solely through those letters. Anyone who has tried to put their feelings for another person into a letter will identify with the vulnerability, honesty, frustrations, and desires of these two characters."
"Love Letters", according to press notes, is a "disarmingly funny and unforgettably emotional portrait about the powerful connection of love. Two friends, rebellious Melissa Gardner and straight-arrow Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, have exchanged notes, cards and letters with each other for over 50 years. From second grade, through summer vacations, to college, and well into adulthood, they have spent a lifetime discussing their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, and victories and defeats. But long after the letters are done, the real question remains: Have they made the right choices or is the love of their life only a letter away?"
"Love letters" is currently on national tour; people continue to enjoy it across the country daily!
