SUNY Oswego's Adopt-A-Grandparent program connects students with senior adults in the community. Each week students from the program visit residents at Morningstar to spend some quality time talking, sharing stories and participating activities such as crafts, games, and themed parties.
"We look forward to seeing the students," said Director at Activities at Morningstar Kelsey Rose. "They are here every Tuesday afternoon and every Sunday and Thursday evening. They engage our residents in some meaningful and fun activities that always bring smiles to their faces. The residents love seeing them and many of them wait at the front door to welcome them as they arrive."
Psychology major and student group leader Sophia Munoz, became aware of the Adopt-A-Grandparent program through her Gerontology and Social Science Classes.
"My professor told me about the program and suggested it would be a good choice for community service. I like being a volunteer and this was a great opportunity to do so. I enjoy interacting with the residents," said Munoz.
Stephanie Treubig, a junior majoring in psychology and freshmen communications major Kayla Peterson echoed that sentiment adding that visiting with the residents reminds them of times they've spent with elders in their own families. "It's very rewarding. I look forward to seeing the residents, said Peterson. "It's kind of a 'homey' experience for me," added Treubig. "It's also a wonderful opportunity to bring college students and the community together in a positive way."
