When Scriba businessman Eric Grimshaw wants something to happen, he does not just sit back and wait for it – he makes it happen. That is exactly what he did when he recently added one more enterprise to his impressive repertoire of successful ventures – Scriba Town Custom Embroidery and Gift Shop.

Grimshaw, who is the owner of Scriba Town Inn and Scriba Town RV Park, is also a major concert event organizer in the area. Located at 5338 state Route 104 East, on the same property as his tavern and RV Park, he said his new embroidery service offers state-of-the-art program design and fast turnaround times.
"I have been doing design work for a while," Grimshaw said. "Customers can sit down with me and we can go from concept right through to design fairly quickly."
He pointed out that his cutting-edge programming allows him to design and digitize customer orders all in one step.
"Because I don't need to send it away to be digitized, it makes the piece more cost effective," Grimshaw explained. "And we can do one piece or 1,000 – there is no limit to what we can do."
A graduate of SUNY Delhi in the field of graphics art, he said he stepped right out of school and straight into entrepreneurship, purchasing Scriba Town Inn in 1993.
"But I always did a little bit of graphic work on the side and for my business," he said. "I designed T-shirts for different holidays, our volleyball and dart leagues and the like for years."
Grimshaw said when the business in Oswego where he took his designs to be embroidered closed, he was stuck because he had used them exclusively.
"We did a lot of business with them and they were quick," he said. "Anywhere else I could go to would take three to four months to get the finished product."
But Grimshaw did not become successful in business by throwing up his hands and accepting an option that was less than adequate for his needs. He said he decided to purchase his own machine in order to do his own embroidery.
"I purchased it not to go into business, but just for myself," Grimshaw explained.
Through word of mouth, however, and people coming into contact with his embroidery work through Scriba Town Inn, he started getting requests from his tavern customers and then from the general public.
"All of the embroidery was done out of my office, but I got so busy I decided to expand and open up a store front," Grimshaw said. "Because it is such a niche and not many places around here are doing embroidery, it just took the right people knowing about it and it took off. Now I have two machines and we are moving right along and growing."
Scriba Town Custom Embroidery and Gift Shop does more than just sweatshirts, hats and visors 430Scriba town emb 5for local and professional sports teams.
"We have a lot of gift ideas," Grimshaw said. "We will monogram towels and sports towels as well as winter hats, scarfs and even duffel bags. We also design embroidered pillowcases with names, dates and silhouettes for weddings and showers."
He said with the new store, he is able to display more of what he can do and has recently expanded into baby items, such as blanket and stuffed animals,
including Teddy Bears, which, he said, make great gifts for baby showers because they are specially made and can be embroidered with the baby's name and birth date right on the bear.
Scriba Town Custom Embroidery and Gift Shop is open from 12-4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
