Oswego County Opportunities is holding its annual public election of members of its Board of Directors who will represent the low-income sector on its Board. Ballots will be available for voting to take place at various sites during the dates and times listed below.

Oswego County Opportunities, Inc. is the county’s Community Action Agency. This designation means that it has a principle focus on eliminating the impact poverty has on Oswego County. As a result of this designation, one-third of OCO’s Board members are required to be either low-income residents of Oswego County themselves or representatives of the county’s low-income sector. These individuals are required to be selected to serve on the Board through a democratic process (voting) by those they represent, low-income individuals.

Nominees are:

Gidget Stevens is a current OCO Board member and the Director of Assistance Programs for Oswego County DSS. This provides her with insight to the needs of the community, particularly the low income. Gidget was in a low income environment and chose this line of work as a way to assist individuals to self-sufficiency. She believes in the mission and vision of OCO and works with OCO on many committees and collaborations.

Linda Hughes currently serves as a Resident Services Coordinator at Fulton Mill Apartments. She understands the needs of the residents at her facility and feels she would be able to grasp the struggles and problems of OCO’s consumers, and work toward helping to make their lives better. She was also involved with her children’s sporting teams, was an elected Town Clerk and was Secretary for her union at Black Clawson.

Sandra Hughes’ life experiences have given her an inside view on the challenges that life offers, and she would like to find ways to help others who may also be facing hard times. She is on the Board of the Fulton Mill Tenant Association, serving as President for 2 years and as Treasurer for 2 years. She loves to be part of planning and organizing events, and learning new and exciting things.

Voting dates are Tuesday, March 28, Wednesday, March 29, and Thursday, March 30, at the following sites:

OCO Crisis & Development Services, Midtown Plaza lower level, E. First and Bridge St., 9:00am – 5:00pm
