The Oswego City School District, in partnership with SUNY Oswego, held its seventh annual Mentor-Scholar Community Dinner on Nov. 8 at Oswego High School as students from both the middle school and high school came together for a night of food, family fun and board games.

"The Community Dinner is a great opportunity for parents to meet the mentors as well as enjoy a relaxed evening with their families" said Andrew Buchmann, Assistant Coordinator for the Mentor-Scholar Program.

During the dinner mentors, mentees and families played board games and card games while they enjoyed their meals.

Missy Russell, middle school Literacy teacher and parent remarked, "It was nice to be able to connect with [student] Alex outside of school," capturing the Mentor-Scholar slogan perfectly: connecting campus and community.

The Community Dinner would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of Oswego County businesses and the Mentor-Scholar Program would like to thank them for their contributions: Hudson's Dairy, Paul's Big M, Price Chopper, Walmart, Canale's Restaurant, Bosco and Geers, Eagle Beverage, Pizza Hut, CupCakers, Subshop, Garafolo's, Ontario Orchards, Cam's Pizzeria, Vona's Restaurant, and Press Box.

The Mentor-Scholar Program is a school-based mentoring program that strives to enrich the lives of students in our community. Mentor-Scholar matches middle school and high school students in Oswego County school districts with trained and supported undergraduate mentors who help provide the academic and social support necessary for each student to achieve their full potential.

Mentors work to build students' self-confidence and self-efficacy while giving them the tools they need to be effective learners. The program also provides an opportunity for SUNY Oswego undergraduates to impact their community while gaining valuable professional skills for their future careers and lives.
