Oswego County Clerk Michael Backus and Real Property Tax Director Betsy Knapp remind local property owners that they can easily obtain property reports and deeds to their property through Oswego County government offices.

A Scriba resident who purchased property in October recently received solicitations from two companies based in Albany, NY. The companies offered to provide a “property assessment profile” or a “property report” and a copy of the deed for $87. The solicitations are similar to ones that circulated in recent years from a company in California.

“This information is public record and available on our website. Please don’t waste $87 for this free information,” said Real Property Director Betsy Knapp. Property descriptions and tax records are posted on the County Real Property Tax website at http://rptsweb.oswegocounty.com/search.aspx.

County Clerk Michael Backus said that when a piece of property is legally transferred, the new transaction is recorded in the Clerk’s Office and the new owner will receive the original deed. Landowners can get a certified copy of their deed for $5 at the County Clerk’s office at 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego.

Those who have questions may call the County Clerk’s Office weekdays at 315-349-8621, or the Real Property Tax Service at 315-349-8315, or visit the offices in the County Office Building, 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego.
