All martial arts teaches self-discipline, courtesy and respect. But the instructors at Master Pryor's Taekwondo America want to make sure the kids remember what's important in the community and the world around them.

They recently encouraged their leadership group to organize and implement a community service project. When Zach Kinney (age 11) and Sage Moody (age 9) heard about the project they jumped at the chance to help out the Oswego Animal shelter. This was the beginning of a new campaign "Scoring for Cats"

Zach approached Theresa Gilbert, the organizer of Oswego Youth Soccer for permission to use the Richard J Benjamin soccer complex for this service project. She not only allowed this but assisted with the project by making copies for the boys to hand out and providing information needed to reach as many people as possible

Sage and his family approached the Oswego Animal shelter with their idea. A representative gave them a list of donations that the shelter is always in need of. People always think of food, treats, and as donation items, but they are always looking for old blankets, towels and shredded paper (no staples please) also. They also agreed to send pictures of cats and kittens that are up for adoption for the booth the boys will set up on June 27th.

SageMoodyThe boys worked at handing out over 300 fliers at the soccer fields this past weekend. The fliers asked for parents, players and family members to consider bringing an item to donate to the shelter the following week when they head to their soccer games. They boys will have a table set up accepting all donations that will immediately be delivered to the shelter. Monetary donations will be accepted also.

When asked why they chose this as their service project, the boys had a lot to say. Sage chose this project because "We adopted our dog from this shelter and I remember seeing a lot of cats when we were there. We had a cat that I loved and I wanted to help other cats" Zach added "I love animals, and I knew immediately when I was told about the project, I wanted to help the animals" He went on to say that he also chose that shelter because it was where he had adopted one of his dogs from. He knew there were a lot of cats that were up for adoption and wanted to spread the word and help them.

ZachKinneyTheir parents were not surprised that the boys chose this as their project. Sage's mom Kayli stated "Sage has always liked the idea of helping the animals". Carrie Kinney added "Zach has always been all about animals. After he visited the shelter he talked about the cats, his "friends" for hours, he would have taken them all home if he could, I really think he will do something with animals as a career, he is already discussing volunteering when he is old enough".

The event this Saturday is hopefully part 1 of 2. Sage has approached the organizers of Oswego Little League with the intent on doing this all over again at the baseball fields over the summer break.

Donations for the "Scoring for Cats" Campaign will be accepted at the Richard J Benjamin Soccer complex Saturday June 27th from 9am to 12:30 pm. Pictures of current adoptable cats will be displayed and applications may be available for "pre-approval" If you can't make it to the soccer fields but want to donate please contact Carrie Kinney at [email protected] or Kayli Moody at [email protected] . Or stop by the shelter and mention "Scoring for Cats"
