Over 50,000 shoe repair shops existed in America in 1922. According to an article from Issue #1 written in 2013, only 7,000 remained. In 91 years, shoe repair stores are going out of business like an endangered species. Due to the low price of these cheaply produced, inexpensive shoes, most people would rather throw out a perfectly repairable pair of boots and waste money. Cortini's Shoe Zipper Canvas Repair remains strong among the few.
The store is located at 215 E. Cayuga St. and has been family owned for over 106 years at the time of this writing. The store has been in the family for three generations, and current store owner Joe Cortini said that he has worked their his entire life. "This is where I was back then and where I will continue to be." Cortini said.
Cortini's is an authorized Birkenstock repairer, and sells Merrell, Saucony and Brooks brand shoes, as well as others. "The biggest thing that nobody else has here in Oswego is the repair," Cortini said. "We won't send anyone away if we think we can fix it."
However, Cortini's can and will repair anything from a coin purse with a broken zipper to re-stitching a pool cover. They also patch clothing, re-sole shoes, polish and re-seal leather, and are able to do same-day repairs on certain projects. Cortini's is able to do orthopedic work as well. From a favorite belt to a teddy bear, Cortini's can be entrusted with any type of upholstery project.
The store has nine active sewing machines all dating back to various eras. The oldest one is from the 1920's, but the store also has industrial machines for industrial sized products.
