SUNY Oswego`s online MBA tied for 14th among online graduate business programs -- the highest of any institution in the state, according to U.S. News` 2014 `Best Online Degree Programs: Business (Graduate)` rankings published Jan. 8.

"This ranking reflects our emphasis on providing real-world opportunities and outstanding teaching to ensure that Oswego students receive the best possible preparation to enter the business world," SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley said.

"The professors teaching our online students have excellent backgrounds, and our well-connected alumni working in the field help students with job placements, co-ops and other hands-on experiences."

The high ranking for Oswego's online MBA shows that the traditionally strong School of Business -- recently reaccredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business -- has successfully translated campus-based instruction to serve students everywhere, Stanley added.

"I am very pleased with the ranking which affirms the quality of the AACSB-accredited program," said Dr. Richard Skolnik, dean of SUNY Oswego's School of Business. "The online program has a rich mix of students across a number of industries. The program offers an option to students who are unable to enroll in traditional classes because of professional or family commitments."

Engagement Emphasized

The rankings emphasize such factors as student engagement (in which Oswego ranked fifth overall), peer reputation, admissions selectivity, faculty credentials and training, student services and technology.

Hands-on opportunities -- including co-ops, internships and volunteer service through student organizations -- have long been an emphasis of Oswego's academic programs, and the college aims for rich experiences for online learners as well.

"Online classes have the same rigor as traditional classes" at Oswego, Skolnik said. "Most of the faculty teaching in the online program also teach classroom-based courses. Online MBA faculty members are recognized for scholarly and professional accomplishments."

Skolnik added that the quality of the online MBA "reflects the investment SUNY Oswego has made in online education," which includes faculty, instructional designers, technology and an MBA office, directed by Irene Scruton, who "provides students with comprehensive advising to meet their professional goals."

Online learning and teaching technology tools serve these efforts well, he said. "SUNY Oswego has a strong group of instructional designers who assist faculty in creating online courses that maximize student learning," Skolnik said. "Additionally, the support of Oswego's Campus Technology Services and the SUNY Learning Network enhances the program's effectiveness."

Oswego's School of Business was the only school in New York state to crack the list's top 30 online graduate business programs. Next in the state came Rochester Institute of Technology's Saunders College of Business at 35th, while Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management and Clarkson University were tied for 39th.

The State University of New York was additionally represented on the best online graduate business list by Stony Brook University and the SUNY Institute of Technology.

"SUNY is focused on educating more New Yorkers and educating them better than ever before, and increased access to the online courses offered across SUNY is one way we are achieving these goals," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "As we continue toward the introduction of Open SUNY, the system's comprehensive delivery of online education for all students, Oswego's experience and leadership will be a critical component."
