With only a few days left, you can hear the murmur of lines being rehearsed, the hum of the sewing machine stitching costumes, and the pounding of hammers hitting nails into the set as everyone is busing working on the Theater Arts Youth Academy production of “Snow White and the Queen of Mean.”

The picture gives a bird’s eye view of the activity surrounding the students putting the finishing touches to their set. With the guidance from Bob Collins, the Oswego Players Set Construction Manager, everyone has a job to complete. It’s all about “team work” when you are involved in community theater. And these young folk are totally immersed in their up-coming production.

For the last four week ends, 16 excited students participated in the first semester of the newly formed Theater Arts Youth Academy sponsored by the Oswego Players, Inc. And during this time, they were exposed to a multitude of topics all dealing with live theater. Acting, Auditioning, Prop Creation, Set Design, Lighting, Make-Up, and Set Construction were just a sampling of topics spotlighted by local experts in their field of theater. With the collaboration of the State University at Oswego and the Art Association of Oswego and financial support from the Oswego City/County Youth Bureau, the Oswego County Community Foundation, and CNYArts, the Academy got off to a successful start.

And now the students get to apply what they have learned in a special stage production of their own. Under the direction of Matt Fleming, Artistic Director of TAYA, the lights go up March 8th at 8 pm and March 9, 10 at 2:00 pm in the Frances Marion Brown Theater at the Civic Center of Oswego. And to say that their hopes are high that lots of people come to see their show, doesn’t even touch the level of emotion each one carries in their hears.
