Theatre Du Jour is getting into the holiday spirit with “The Santaland Diaries” by David Sedaris, one of America’s most distinguished humor writers and a master of satire.

"A delightfully thorny account of working as a Yuletide elf at Macy's. Priceless observations, both outrageous and subtle. Destined to hold a place in the annals of American humor writing." - The New York Times

The Santaland Diaries is a brilliant evocation of what a slacker's Christmas must feel like. Out of work, our slacker decides to become a Macy's elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa's workshop, he becomes battle-weary and bitter. Finding consolation in the fact that some of the other elves were television extras on One Life to Live, he grins and bears it, occasionally taking out his frustrations on the children and parents alike. The piece ends with yet another Santa being ushered into the workshop, but this one is different from the lecherous or drunken ones with whom he has had to work. This Santa actually seems to care about and love the children who come to see him, startling our hero into an uncharacteristic moment of goodwill, just before his employment runs out.

Bringing this roller coaster ride, one-man show to the stage is Director Strange/David Fuller. David grew up in Syracuse but spent most of the last twenty years in Indiana. He is a member of ComedySportz Worldwide and has performed over 800 times with the group in Indianapolis and in Buffalo since 2002. With this group he performed in ten World Championships and guest starred in several cities including New Orleans, NYC, and LA. In 2013, peers from 24 ComedySportz cities voted him an All-Star.

Actor Matthew Fleming, who will bring Crumpet, the elf to life, has appeared onstage in a variety of theatrical, musical and operatic productions for companies including the SUNY Fredonia Theatre and Music Departments, Hillman Opera, Binghamton Savoyards and various community theater groups.

“The Santaland Diaries” is part of the Quality Inn / GS Steamers Dinner Theatre Series (December 9), the Barnes Hiscock Mansion Dinner Theatre Series (December 11) and the Eis House Dinner Theatre Series, (December 15).
